They say that long ago the whole area was under water; and they can show us the remains of thousands of sea animals, found in the rock layers, as proof that where we now have mountains there was once a sea. The rock itself is part of the proof for much of it is limestone formed from the ground-up shells of millions of shellfish. Other rocks in the mountains are shale, formed from mud or silt brought into the olden sea by rivers. When the sea waters were dried up, or were pushed away by rising land, the mud was left to dry and harden into rock.
