Disposable oil filters are not designed to last for more than one oil change. Almost all disposable oil filters will get clogged before they make it to the second change. They're meant to be used only once. Reusing a disposable oil filter from the previous oil change may cause a lot of damage.

And for oil filters, we suggest tightening it as tight as you can get it by hand – so you turn it until it stops naturally, and then you might be able to twist it another quarter of a turn. And if you have to use a 12-inch breaker bar to get it off, then back off a little next time.

A loose oil filter can affect the engine oil pressure and cause it to drop. Low oil pressure could also result from a problem with the oil pressure sensor, the oil pump, or worst case scenario: enough oil has leaked from your engine so that the oil pressure is too low to facilitate normal operating conditions.

Do you need to prefill an oil filter? ›
