Jones, Special to the Independent-Mail Judy Price of Elberton stands by the historical marker directing interested parties to the site and burial place of the Rev. Daniel Tucker, inspiration for the folk song "Ol' Dan Tucker." Folk lore, tunes make Elbert County area proud By Juanita T. Jones Special to the I lent-Mail Tucker legend: "Old Dan Tucker was a grand old man; He washed his face in a frying pan; He combed his hair with a wagon wheel, and died with a toothache in his heel. Get out o' the way for old Dan Tucker! He's too late to get his supper. This folk tune has been credited to Dan Emmett who used it as a banjo dance tune in his minstrel show about 120 years ago.
"Not so," say folks in Elbert County who insist that the tune and at least some of its many verses originated there and were about the Rev. Daniel Tucker, who was born on Feb. 14, 1740 in Virginia and migrated to Elbert County as a young man. Records show that in 1798 he bought land on the Savannah River that had a ferry from John Heard. In 1817, the Georgia Legislature authorized him to operate a ferry from his own land to that of John Spear on the opposite shore.
The site is still known as Tucker's Ferry. Due to the rich bottom lands along the river and his expertise as a farmer, at least one young man was bound to him as an apprentice to learn farming skills. In addition to his farming and ferrying, he added the responsibility of the ministry and was warmly welcomed to the homes of the plantation owners, but because he also felt a deep responsibility for Happening preaching the gospel to the slaves on those plantations, he was even more welcomed in the slave quarters. They adored him and it was they who started the folk song about him that became a favorite of President Abraham Lincoln. The humorous verses were the result of the slaves gentle teasing.
The chorus about "You're too late to get your supper" probably was teasingly sung when Rev. Tucker would arrive after the evening meal was over, but then they bustled about to prepare food for his supper. The Tucker home was located near the ferry since travelers had to yell for the boat when they needed to cross the river. The family graveyard is nearby and each family member's grave is marked with a simple stone. Dan Tucker became ill on April 4, 1818 and sent for friends to witness his will.
He left his property to his wife, Frances, for her lifetime provided that their daughters, Frances and Susannah, and their sons, Ruben and Shem, should live with her until they married. After the death of his wife his grandsons Ethil, Gabriel, Robert and Eppes were to receive $1 each and his namesake, Daniel, was to receive his old gray mare. He died three days after making the will. He was 78 years old. Sedena Summers and Erin Wansley of Elbert county showed their amusem*nt at the antics of "Ol' Dan Tucker" as they share a book of verse about him.
